Campaign Resources for Consumer Educators

User-friendly, ready to go resources for consumer education campaigns and outreach. Many of these resources can be adapted to include specific logos and branding.

  • Save the Food – this campaign created by the Ad Council and National Resource Defense Council features:
    • Outreach and campaign materials – including posters and videos that can be displayed in program waiting rooms, and sample social media messages.
    • Food storage directory – an in-depth guide to help consumers maximize the use of their everyday food items from seven main groups: fruits; vegetables; meat, poultry, and seafood; pantry staples; dairy and eggs; beans, nuts and vegetarian proteins; and oils, condiments and spices.
  • Food Too Good To Waste – by the US Environmental Protection Agency features:
    • Implementation Guide – for local governments and community based organizations to launch Food Too Good To Waste campaigns in their communities.
    • Toolkit – to support households and individuals in making behavior change to reduce food waste and save money.
    • Recipe Cards with storage, preparation, and cooking tips – customized by Live Well San Diego. These templates can be adapted for use in any Southern California jurisdiction.
  • Let’s Talk Trash – a USDA My Plate food waste prevention campaign features:

    • Consumer-friendly resources – including meal planning worksheets, tips for proper storage, food safety, refrigerator organization, donation, recycling and more!
    • Infographics to educate consumers about food waste (in 1 and 2 page version) that can be shared on social media, posted in waiting rooms, or displayed at cooking demonstration and outreach events.

Resources for Food Recovery and Prevention

These resources provide more background information and data on the issue of food waste and food recovery. Get informed on the issues, and stay up to date on current trends and developments with the resources below. 

  • Safe Surplus Food Donation Toolkit - by the Public Health Alliance of Southern California, the California Conference of the Directors of Environmental Health, and the Center for Climate Change and Health

    • This toolkit was created for use and distribution by Environmental Health Departments across California to educate food facilities about safe surplus food donation, including information on liability protections, state mandates, and safe surplus food donation practices.
  • Safe Surplus Food Donation Best Management Practices - by the Public Health Alliance of Southern California, the California Conference of the Directors of Environmental Health, and the Center for Climate Change and Health

    • This guidance was created for use by Environmental Health Departments across California interested and committed to adopting and implementing strategies to educate food facilities about safe surplus food donation.
  • Food Recovery Guide – by the LA Food Policy Council Food Waste Rescue and Prevention Work Group

    • Reducing Food Waste: Recovering Untapped Resources in Our Food System provides detailed information on food waste, food donation, related policies, and food waste practitioners in the Los Angeles area. While the practitioners are specific to Los Angeles, many organizations operate in neighboring jurisdictions – or can give you an idea of what types of organizations to look for in your own community to partner with on food waste reduction.
  • Further with Food – launched by the Rockefeller Foundation, USDA, and EPA with additional partners

    • Further with Food is an interactive resource hub where you can find and share resources related to all aspects of food waste. Filter resources by topic, audience, type of source (academic, government, etc.), type of resource (book, research paper, audio, infographics, etc.), and share your own!
    • Follow @FurtherWithFood for food waste prevention news and information.
  • ReFED – a multi-stakeholder nonprofit

    • The ReFED website provides an interactive resource of data and solutions related to food waste reduction, innovation, and policy initiatives. The ReFed Roadmap details 27 strategies to solve food waste, highlighting consumer education as the most cost-effective solution.
